I'll never forget the call from a Dutch mold shop last October. Their new 5-meter gantry was drifting 0.15mm over an 8-hour run-killing precision on large injection molds. They'd checked everything: recalibrated scales, replaced linear guides, even hired a metrology firm. Nothing fixed it.
We flew over. Spent a morning just watching. Then I noticed it: the machine sat under a skylight. Morning sun hit the left column at 9 AM. By noon, that side had expanded 0.08mm more than the shaded right side. The bridge twisted. Accuracy vanished.
Thermal distortion is the silent killer of gantry accuracy-and it hides in plain sight. Unlike smaller VMCs where heat sources are centralized, gantries span meters. A few degrees difference between columns? That's microns of error before the spindle even turns.
But heat isn't the only thief:
Foundation matters more than castings. I've seen shops pour beautiful 300mm concrete pads-then skip the vibration isolation layer. Heavy trucks passing outside transmit energy through the slab. One Italian aerospace supplier measured 0.03mm table movement every time a delivery van braked nearby. They added rubber isolation pads. Problem gone.
Guide rail preload is a double-edged sword. Too loose? Backlash ruins corner accuracy. Too tight? Friction heats the rails unevenly-causing thermal growth mid-run. We set preload based on actual cutting loads-not factory defaults. A Hungarian customer gained 0.05mm repeatability just by adjusting this.
Tooling deflection gets ignored. On large parts, you're often using 200mm+ long tools. That stick-out flexes under load-especially on roughing passes. One Polish shop blamed their gantry for bell-mouthed bores. We switched them to shorter, stiffer holders. Accuracy snapped back instantly. Same machine. Same program.
